The Berg five speed kit starts at $1400, and trans must be completely torn down to install kit, as the main shaft needs to be extended. You will also need front mount kit, and shifter($$$). I looked at this kit ten years ago, and didn't have the cash to do it. I was going to get my type I tranny rebuilt and put the berg kit with it, but life got in the way

.So, ten years later I'm in a position again to rebuild the bug, but have changed to a 915 tranny insted.
The Berg kit is a good kit, don't get me wrong, but for my new plans the 915 is a better choice for the price. The fabrication to put the 915 in is right up my alley

. This is all just my opinion of course. Judging from your progress (STF euro look forum) you should have no trouble, no matter which way you go.
