I picked up the Winter 2007 Paint and Body issue of HotRod Magazine, and they had an article on painting a car with a roller for a total of (get this) 25USD worth of paint. They admit that it takes a lot of time and elbow grease, but still, for 25 USD of paint I wouldn't be terribly concerned about getting scuffed and scratched racing.
They said in the article that they traced the story back to a thread on
www.moparts.com. They cut canned (not spray) Rustoleum with paint thinner, and put it on with a roller designed to leave a smooth finish, wet sand after every other coat, shake well, and viola. I put a link to the article from their website below.
