Ed I don't know if your car had this going on, but here goes ...
Public service announcement time:
Never put a filter on the pressure side of the fuel pump, avoid putting it in the engine bay at all.
Under the fuel tank or above the transaxle are ok.
- cheap filters can crack or even burst under pressure especially if the engine is running hot, the engine bay area will get warm
- filters can get heavy (filled with fuel) and wiggle the fitting on the carb loose
