Cooling Question

What do you guys think will cool and big power plant better; stock shroud, porsche shroud, or that new system (I think it's called DTM?).

From what I have seen the DTM seems to cool the best out of all the systems available. I am probably going to use a DTM on my 2276 T1 but when I do another T4 Im probably gonna use a 911 setup because it looks good and fits the german look well and should cool my motor adequately because it will not be as radical as my 2276.

DTM all the way.
I currently have porsche cooling, but will be switching to a DTM for my next engine build.
The porsche shroud is great for looks, but doesnt cool evenly, needs an external oil cooler, tinware has to be made to fit, is overpriced etc etc.
Top kit of the DTM gives you everything you need to bolt in and go Very easy to add a thermostatically controlled additional rad if needed (shouldnt be in most apps), looks very nice in carbon fibre (or normal), uses stock alternator, can change fans out very easily, can get a serpentine belt conversion for it etc etc.

Sam C

i am one of the few that has run both and in my case they were on the same exact engine. flat out, the DTM cooled MUCH better on my engine. with the 911 is was running 325-350 with a 50 degree swing between heads at times.

i just put a few miles on my DTMed engine. ran 90mph up a 30 degree hill that is about 3/4 mile long and the heads were dead even at 260 when we hit the top.

just stating facts. i love the look of the 911 shroud, but the cooler the heads, the more HP you get.

The Type I DTM is finally all tested up and will go on sale on October 15th. The Type I DTM is 1/2 the price of the cheapest 911 system for the Type I engine and controls cylinder head temperatures about 65% better than the best 911 system we tested.

Even stock beat the best 911 system on a Type I engine in my testing on two different engines! This was both in the car and on the dyno.

http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/type1/dtm/index.htm

The DTM is not a new system. The original designer of the DTM, Joe Locicero started working on it in the mid 80s. The Type IV shroud was released in 1988 and was covered in the September and October Hot VWs in 1995.

Joe perfected the Type IV before he passed away in July 2002. The Type I shroud was never fully perfected because the Type I shroud was harder for him to make and he stayed plenty busy just making the Type IV shrouds. I picked up where Joe left off with the Type I and made it much easier to build. We then had to test it out and make it work- that took me 7 solid months!

We have started an email discussion list just for the shroud. Here people can share DTM experiences, ask questions and get plenty of information to see if a Type I DTM is right for them. You can sign up for the list by following the link I posted above.

Another good point to be made is parasitic drag caused by driving the fan.

Takes less juice to spin a VW's radial fan than it does to spin a Porsche's axial fan. Plus, a radial fan moves a large volume of air, and an axial fan moves air at high velocity.

...that and the DTM shroud just looks so damn trick! :agree:
