				Type 4?

Hi, I can get a '71 Standard for $200 & I found a bus that has been sitting in the backlot of a used car dealer. I was wondering what is the BARE MINIMUM I need to put the bus motor in the bug. I am not planning to upgrade anything yet, I just want to swap motors & get it running for now. I am sorry but I don't know alot about busses so I don't know what engine or year it is. :help: |

You guys are always saying more info so, I just want to know if I can modify the Type 1 fan for the Type 4. Do I use a Type 4 flywheel w/ a Type 1 clutch? Can I use the Type 1 carb w/ modified Type 4 manifolds? I have used the search function on GL, Shoptalk, & Samba (no body shows anything for a BASIC swap) most of what I get are suby conversions & posts telling people to use the search button. :help:

The best way to swap engines in my opinion, is to get a DTM shroud from Jake first. He has conversion kits in differnet stages for this swap. This is the best way to convert. Then you need dual carb's and electric fuel pump plus some kind of exhaust system, as the bus stuff won't work in a bug swap. Before you go asking or buying anything for the swap you need to know what year bus it is. I belive the type IV motor started in '72 and went thru '78 or '79 not completely sure on years, but motors went from 1.7, 1.8, and 2.0 thru the years. P.S. If you don't know who Jake is, you better start reading his site before you do anything else www.aircooledtechnology.com

Thanks. So, I guess there is no cheap way to do it. I think I'll stick w/ the Type 1 until I can get some more cash. I have been to Jakes site & I can't wait to get a DTM for my ride.

IF you are on a budget and you are sticking to a stock type 4 from a bus, you can do a "Joe Cali" coversion with a type 1 fan shroud (get the Joe Cali book from Jake at www.type4store.com .you can shorten a set of 411/412 heater boxes and use a bus (type 4) header/muffler or Jake's "econo" exhaust. You will however need a coversion flywheel/pressure plate.

I was going to suggest the "Joe Cali" conversion, but for most, its too much fabrication. Cutting and welding sheet metal can be a PITA sometimes unless you have a good welder and lots of time and patience. However, as NO_H2O said, it is cheaper than DTM kit, just not as easy.

Equipment & time is something I have a lot of but, my funding is something I have to watch. Thanks for the info. What is a good flywheel/clutch for this swap?

it may not work with the budget, but Jake also sells flywheels with the conversion already done: http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/s...1&cat=0&page=1 otherwise, there are some options. I went with a 200mm. |

If your not so keen on the fabrication and on a budget, check out Sharpbuilt from Australia. They offer fiberglass cylinder covers that you use with a standard dog house fan shroud, to convert the engine to upright cooling. http://www.sharpbuilt.com.au/new_page_2.htm The Joe Cali book also talks about clutch and flywheel options, but I can't remember the details for a non-IRS bug. Cheers Jeremy

Does the Joe Cali book have templates for the cylinder covers?
