944 brakes on bay window bus
Hi guys,
Looking for some help on a brake swap on a 1969 bus. I know i have the correct spindles as they use the same bearing as the 944 and maybe 911. What i need to know is what year 944 brake hub rotorwill i need? do you need to make some sort of bearing spacer? I will be using a non porsche caliper, i'll fab a mount for that. If you have info on using the porsche caliper i can use that as well.If you have any info (more detailed the better) it would be greatly apreciated. Thanks! |

I did a 944 NA conversion on a 67 bus. You're right, the bearings are the same between bus and 944, but the 944 spindles are shorter (ie, the bearings are are closer together than on a bus). Hence you need to make up some spacers and put then under the bearing races (inner and outer race) in the 944 hub so that when mounted on the bus the bearings will be the correct width to match the bus spindle. I machined the spacers out of 6061T6 aluminum. That's all it takes to mount the hub/disk. Then make up the caliper bracket and you're done.
Good Luck. |

Thanks Flat,
I do need some info for this conversion if you could offer some more help. I have a set of 1977 911 front rotors and hubs and they share the same bearings,buss,911,944 and i did slide them on and see that i will need to make a spacer. I belive the 911 hubs are different than the 944, should i look for a 944 hub, rotor and what year? Are there different offset hubs ? I noticed to make the 911 hub/rotor fit, It would make the rotor spaced away fron the back of the spindle a fair amount. Once instaled with the track be wider or will the rotor face now sit where the original drum face was? IOm instaling a 2.7 911 motor in this bus and really want the vented 944 style brakes. Sorry for all the questions i just want to do this right. Thanks for your time.
