Alternative Fuel Tank Suggestions

Was wondering if anyone had ideas or has tried different fuel tanks on their bugs. I have a 69' and need to replace the tank and wanted to go with something more modern if possible (plastic, fiberglass, etc.). Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks

Hey elev8_dude

I also have a 69 and I have put a Racing Fuel Cell in the Front
I just took the Stock one measured it up and got one around that Size
and just made a Frame for the NEW tank.

I know of a local shop that does the V8 Focus conversions, and most of the cars that have left that shop have fuel cells. Those cars are made for street use and pass regular inspection without any heard of issues.
Would it be safe, I figure if mounted corretly it should be safer than any normal gas tank, that;s why it's required on race cars.

The Fuel Safe cell in Herbie X has a sender in it. It was 16 gal before the foam went in (prob. 13 gal. now) I think he paid over 2K to have it made but it wa a custom job.

How about this custom fuel cell made for the Herbie-X project, seen here on the bottom of page 2 -

I believe Dave-NO_H20 has posted some other pics here somewhere, and I think he said it's a 16 gallon.

The Herbie-X tank has 16 gallons, and was custom made by Fuel Safe. They could make another one now that they have one made. It also has a kevlar bladder inside. Get your wallet out $$$

This tank was installed in a very trick Myers Manxter, the owner had it made up custom by a major marine and race-car fuel cell manufacturer. The Manxter normally takes a standard VW fuel tank - so this should work in a Beetle and possibly another fiberglass buggy design. Capacity is ~13gl. Said the cost was $620 (as shown). That's dirt cheap if you look at what Fuel Safe will charge!

Thats crazy money. I'm just coming off a $1,800 to $2,000 upgrade on my 69 Type 1. I'll give a call to Fuel Safe just to see and keeping looking for alternatives. Hey there is always EBAY.
