I just bought the RS magazine (porsche dedicated) of august 2005, an on an article about the 550 spyder, they were saying that with a 1498cc engine, they were able to produce 100 hp!!!! while stock 1600cc VW engine produce 57hp. The question is: HOW DID THEY DO IT (without enlarging the engine size)!? I mean, knowing that, what kind of HP can I expect with a 1835cc with such high RPM? This is a good question and it needs reflexion...

550's used a quad-cam boxer. very little similar to a Type 1. i am no expert on the engine though to specify where the power comes from. you can get into one of those engines for about $400k-$500k though...if you can fine one.

Thank you Zen. Yeah..I see the trick... Although I've found such an engine for 5500 USD. Not that bad if you consider Rabi prices... But you've got to a damn good and patient macanic to play around those engines: to tune the four cams it takes up to 15 hours!!!!! Let me tell you; you don't change them every day. Another reason you get so much power is the 2 sparkplug per cylinder: better fuel efficency. I was wondering zen (or anybody) do you know if that's what the Apfelbeck project's all about: 4 head cams?

I have seen 1600cc T1 motors that make 140HP.
Its all in the heads and the compression of the motor.

Quote:
2 inlet valves and one exhaust for each head should make them able to produce 115 HP/Liter.. |

No completion date yet...
We all have full jobs and a personal life as well We will get this project finished, but we won't rush it. The original plan was to go for a "one off a kind" engine. That would have been way easyer than to try an make it into something that can be built in small series... We will finish this project as fast as our spare time AND our budget allows
