Absolutely, it is possible. I have heard it is best to buy in pairs to make sure both are originals or both are aftermarket or ... well, so they match. Apparently, there can be subtle differences even though there shouldn't be any.
I have no personal experience but I have heard the rear wings (fenders) are interchangeable -- and that extends to standard Beetles with Supers as well.
There may be a cut-off year with interchangeability, but I would think all IRS years are fair game. The '72-to-'73/'79 certainly isn't a problem.
