Shad is totally right...What I have learned is that a huge sump can actually MAKE FOR HOTTER OIL after the engine is held at one RPM for a while....Seems that with all that hot oil, it helps preheat the rest of the oil....I had a 3-1/2 quart sump on an engine a few years ago, and had temps of 235 most of the time....The sump kept scraping the ground so I removed it and replaced it with a 1.5 quart sump.

Temps dropped 40 degrees! No other changes made!
