I was going to use a 901 in my car and the answer I got was to use an "AutoStick" starter with the 200mm type 1 flywheels. I built the transaxle, had the AutoStick starter but never got it in the car. I traded the 901 and starter away for a nice 66 bug for me daughter.

starter motor.
I am using the stock porsche 901 starter motor on a 5spd. This will run into an STI engine via kennedy adapter bits. I just got my fresh trans back and have the following part number on the starter: Bosch 0-001-212-002 EB-> 12V .08PS
hope that helps... I have a link to a local porsche race house that specializes in the older 911 cars if you need a line a verified parts... keep us posted. |

hey chug- a- bug, what did you do starter wise?
i have a reconditioned 1600 type 1 (actually got out of a bay, but is type 1) theres no starter in the project, which one do i need to work well? i remember someone telling me a bug one would work but you had to machine into the gearbox casing slightly to allow the starter to go in more. do i use a porsche starter or bug starter, preferably bug, as i can get my hands on one no probs. cheers jmd, i just wonder what the difference will be as im running just a stock bug motor, but ill deffo give you a shout if i need parts, cheers guys... |

I think I remember reading that the autostick VW and the 914 starter had the same part numbers and will work with the 200mm type 1 flyeheel.

Hey Sorry about that...
Soo ya you can use a 091 bus /914 Starter, but you willhave to Shave off about 8mm on the housing for the gear to Ingage. a type1 Starter Will work but you wil just chew up the gear after a few Starts, hope that help if ya need any thing else just ask... Chris.

From talking with Martin, a while back.
Another option you can use is utilizing an IMI-104 starter which has a little longer engagement than the IMI 101.. if memory serves me correct. http://www.hitorque.com/index.php Can't remember price.. vs machining housing. Alex Bugat5speed has an account with them if needed.

the engine and flywheel fits into the bell housing ok, but the starter wont contact it.
the engine came out of a bay and has the large 280mm flywheel. ive been told to use porsche starter. ive also been told to use 912 flywheel on a beetle engine to get it to engage with starter. but i went to look at a 912 a mate of mine has. it has beetle engine. but the flywheel is the same width (280) and depth (37 mm away from engine case to edge of flywheel tooth nearest gearbox) can you guys tell me something- is the 912 flywheel the same as the type 2(bay) 280 mm flywheel. is there anyone out there that could help me with this? ops:  |

hey... if you are using a T1 then you Need a 200mm flywheel and a autostick/bus Starter and you are going to have to take out the Stud that holds the starter and shave
about 5mm off, then everything Should work. hope that helps Chris.

gotit started!!! wooooooooohooooooooo!!! using a 914/ t25 auto starter......... works a treat!! ok........... next problem........ i have stock beetle clutch cable with special ends for porsche throw out arm. when i press clutch, the arm is pulling underneath ok to throw out the bearing but only moves slightly before hitting gearbox case underneath. it seems to me like i should maybe have a spacer behind the throw out arm, means the release bearing would be closer to the clutch and the arm could travel more underneath........ or else slightly bend the arm, but worried about that one!! any ideas?? |
