Rebuilding a T4 1.8 with so many ?'s
I am currently rebuilding a 1.8 out of a 411/412. I have so many questions and dont know where to start!
First off, I have the entire engine dissamsembled. ![]() Here are my goals for the engine: 1. Want to try and keep it as reliable as possible! 2. Want to make it a mild performance engine (130-150 HP) (dont know how possible it is) 3. Want to do it within a reasonable price. What I have learned so far... I can go with the 96mm pistons that are still slip-ins and require no machining. However, the ones I found are the KB's and are $525. Just a little out of my range. Are there some somewhere that are less expensive? So far, I have only spoken with Jake Raby. Also, does anyone know where I can find a shroud that has been converted? The DTM is the one I would really like, but runs $600. How much money am I looking at in the long run, to get this engine in my car? Pretty much I am looking for any information that can help me out! I am a college student and working 45 hours a week. I have fallen victim to the VW addiction and just have a desire to keep on making mine better! All advice is welcome. -E |

Yep, I know the feeling..
I can only chime in on the shroud. If your going mild, then maybe a Next Gen Conversion may fit your bill. Its a do it yourself upright based on Type I parts.. Not sure if it will support the HP you have indicated, but food for thought.. Loaf

One option could be stock replacement 94mm P/C set for a 2.0 bus $229 from CIP. I'm not sure about slip-in or not as i've only built typeI HP motors so far, but two weeks ago i got a 2.0 typeIV long block out of a running '77 bus for free

He has a 1.8 crank. The 2.0 bus pistons have an incorrect pin height and are incompatible with the 1.8 bottom end..
And with a 13cc dished piston getting any CR from the engine would be a big challenge..

Holy crap, Jake Raby is everywhere!
I got all the answers I needed from Jake. I am going with the econo 96mm pistons and the 9130 cam. I assume that I can use my same crank and rods? Hopfully! Jake is a tremendous help and from what I read sells the best parts! My next step is trying to make enough money to get the DTM shroud. -E |

Yep, Jake gets around. He must have a secret room with pc's logged on to every aircooled forum on the planet 247
![]() Thank's Jake for clearing up the 94mm piston issue. I wasn't sure if they would work. I'm just learning about type IV's myself as i said in my previous post ![]()
