cam questions

ok im new to the engine rebuilding myself. i have always told a builder what i wanted it for and he built it. now i want to build it myself. im lost on what cams are good. What does a 260/70/80/90 degrees represent? and what should i look for when buying a cam. I read what most people use but can someone help me understand what you use for what reason.?

thanks

That would be duration.
As for what to look for, well that depends on the rest of the combo.

What size engine are you going to build? Are you going to use stock or high ratio rockers? What heads are you going to use? Are you going to keep heater boxes or go to a merged header? Lots of stuff to figure out before you select a cam. There are some good tips in the tech library on www.aircooled.net

Look at a web 111 or 119, e-mail Jake and double check.

Duration is how long the valve is held open for. Lift will give you low end torque and torque accross the rpm range. Buy a split duration cam. these are more combo specific and will give far more power and a broad power range. This is where the intake is 290 dur. and the exhaust is 280 dur. for example. CB performance stocks these.
