Thanks for the great pics I will be calling you. Wally that last pic was what I was going to ask! what is the height from the block to the bottom ring. To get a base from where to start, thanks again for the great Info, and pics ( keep them comming) Dave

As an excellent craftsman, I knew you only needed half a word to understand what I was trying to say/let you see ;-)
Haven't measured as you mentioned, but I'll see what is possible when the engine gets out for whatever reason during this season. Which is quite likely seeing the power she has now; Clutch would be my first concern (again..). |

I took some pics that I thought might help. My engine sits like that for the moment so it's probably easier than Wally taking his off :P
Front/rear mounts: And some measurements: Hope this will help. If I can be of any assistance, please let me know. Oh, and Wally, I wanted to ask you: I recieved this part allong with the riechert kit, but I don't know what it's for / where to mount it. But probably there is a reason that guy sent it to me from germany Maybe you know... it's the black one next to the pulley.

It's funny how this thread has morphed from upright 911 shrouds to horizontal cooling, I guess you can thank the "Mythbuster", and wanting to put an intercooler into the engine bay for that
Here's a couple more pictures I found while surfing, hope the owner of this setup does not mind, but it looks like the original 911 ring is being used. So who is volunteering to make the first prototype I'll make my drawings / files / templates available once my version has been built and tested. I'll be using the original 911 ring / alt that I have, only because I already have it. Sandeep |

horizontal cooling
Thanks Xellex for those pics. Pictures with measurments I too will be using the 911 ring, (cause I have it) My tig welding skills will be put to the test. Sandeep I can't draw a stick man so I will make as I go. The one thing that puzzels me is the tighting of the belt. Some systems the idler rollers are on an angle others are straight? Anyway thanks for the updated info and pics.Dave

Here's a pic of the top left area of my ring .... it already has mounting holes (for the stock coil I will assume). This will make the fabrication of a rear mount trivial.
The front mount / idler pulley mount will take more thought, as the angles of the pulleys are set by the diameter of the crank pulley, and the final location of the fan ring. I am using my FAT pulley as it has already has the 36-1 trigger wheel mounted for my ignition system. I'm going to mock things up with MDF wood and then have a chat with some machinists at our next club meeting. Sandeep |

Just above/besides the oil pump. My set-up sat on an original converted 914 2.0 engine and had a piece of engine tin around the crank pulley, probably to resemble the type 1 surround tin around the pulley for engine bay air sealing. So I strongly think it was meant to mount onto some extra tinware and seal the engine bay from hot air radiating from the exhaust. Hope you understand what I am trying to say.. Greets, Walter PS: sorry Sandeep to deviate from the original topic (NOT! ) |

Its all good Wally
I'm assuming the belt is tightened like all 911 systems, by using shims under the fan pulley. Sandeep |

Just thinking, from the pics you posted sandeep. I could leave the oilcooler in the factory spot and make shrouding for it? Dave

Great pictures xellex, just measured it and found 145 mm from the top of the fan blade down to the top of the engine block. Have included the picture in the gallery below. Also included some pictures of my Dads recent (pretty crude riveted) setup His setup relies solely on a strap holding the fan in place, It is rock solid. Note the label at the carb

Hey Sandeep,
Instead of the 911 shim system for belt tightening, I would put a spring loaded tensioner on one of the 90deg pulleys, that way there is less chance of throwing a belt when the belt stretches. I believe corvairs peeps used this mod too Bry

Never had a problem with the tightening of the belt nor with belt throwing...
You just have to make sure the correct length belt is used and it is tightened.

Hi Sved, PM me and I'll send you what you need.
Got a bit busy over summer with kids and outdoors but winter's on the door step. Beetle should progress nicely, want to have it finished this time next year.
