Starter and Alternator

I've got a 63 Bug, i just bought it and it was running but the guy before me tried to jump it battery to battery and it fried the jumper cables and god knows what else. I took it in to my dad's friend's VW shop because i dont have any time to work on it at the moment, and he said the starter was fried and we wont know if the alternator's bad until we get it started. They already checked out the wiring to see if it's grounding out anywhere but no dice.
Its got a 1500 now and i want to go to a 2332, I heared that you need to use a beefier starter for this, What do you guys suggest?
