G50

Hey guys im looking around for a g50 trans i really want a 6 speed but for the right deal i would get a 5 speed. is there anything i should look for as far as year, bell type ect.. ive seen short and long bells. are they all tail shift or do some have side shift?

ive also read that some require some major work to get to work?
tell me if im wrong but i believe its the newer ones that need mods to work after 88 or so. what mods do they need? any info would be great, id hate to drop alot of cash on something i couldnt use.

Thanks
Mike

G50 was only on 87ish on 911s. Not sure if it came on the C2 at all?

Are you sure you are not thinking of the 901 tranny? Which came in 911s and 914s (tail or side shift).

Also the 915 is a very strong tranny and has a standard pattern (the 901 is dogleged for 1st)... You would have to have a huge motor to hurt the 915.

ill be doing the ever popular ej20t or tt, im shooting for anywhere between 3-400 hp so im sure i want togo g50 i just wasent sure if they all had tail shifters, after alot of reading today im pretty sure they are all tail shifters

ive seen a 6 speed that came from an 86. i believe from 86-88 (g50/01) had magnesium cases and the later ones have aluinimum cases (G50/02) not 100% sure though...

from the looks of things i think i will actually look for a later trans, i dont think the difference in bell lenghts is going to make a huge difference with all the cutting required to fit a g50 in, and really wont matter if i use a 6 speed because im sure its alot longer and im guessing that its only harder to install a later trans because it requires more clearencing. i dont plan on keeping the stock horns anyway, it will all be tubed, so it shouldnt really matter

there isnt alot of info out there on a g50 swaps, the Aussieveedubbers site seems to have the most info ive found and even thats got a limited amount of info, ill keep looking but my eyes are all from looking at the monitor to much lol

im really in no rush, im looking for the right deals on things, i dont even have a car yet, but i am definitely doing a notch, if i could just force people to answer their e-mails lol, you would think that they would be motivated to sell their cars the money is starting to burn in my pocket haha

thanx for the reply and thanks to bug@5speed for the stuff you sent me, very cool and informative

Mike

Hi,

G-50 is introduced and used first in 3.2 1987 911
None of the G-50 series was made of magnesium case.
Short bellhousing are all 1987-89 units and some later ones.
When 1990 C2 3.6 was introduced the G-50 was "officially called" G-64.
Early 3.2 versus later 3.6 bellhousings are also shorter in the flywheel side as the later ones used the "dual mass" flywheel/clutch setup who is more thick than the earlier.
6 speed was an option on the first 993 (G50/21 & G50/20).
Hydraylic clutch is standard on all years G-50.
Most of them have a 9:31 R&P.

What do you want to install beetle or bus ?
In a beetle requires major modifications and if you want a 6spd is required to remove your frame horns completely and to scract built your engine mounts to "floating" type as vanagons and 911 used.

Good luck

thanks for the reply Jim, you know the web.. full of missinformation, i dont remember where i read about the mag case, it was a long day of reading many websites...

its actuall going to be in a notchback (dream car from the first time i layed eyes many many years ago) and from the start i was pretty much counting on dumping the stock frame horns and doing some seroius amputation of the torsion housing, im planning coil-overs so it should be no bigger a deal than anything else lol

could you recommend any one g50(g64) over another? /01 /02 /05 from reading the 05 is said to be the better of the bunch.. but ill refer to the top line of this reply

any thoughts on the Getrag 6?

Thanks
Mike

its either going to be a (2.0l) suby ej20t or the twin turbo version(much research has yet to be done on that topic), for sure a turbo, ill be shooting for the 350-400hp range. A turbo ecotec (2.2l) isnt out of the question either.

Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,

Well, I suggest you to find a "short" bellhousing G50/00 , G50/01
If you can't find one the you can find more easily one from a 1990 C2 G50/03 who has also a ZF lsd 40%.
Check classfieds at : www.pelicanbbs.com www.rennlist.com www.ebay.com
Six speeders are very long.

good luck

Why not try a 915 from a 930? Strong and much easier to fit in.

well im kinda set on a 6 speed right now plus i have never really done things the easy way lol

even if i do a 5 speed i dont see wasting time doing all the work and money to put a 915 in it just to turn around and put a g50 in when im not happy with 915 or i eat it up

Thanks Mike!
Whatever you want about these just ask!

Adrian,

All early 930 are 4 speed.Later ones G50/50 (965) are 4$k and up....
Also early ones have mechanical clutch.
So it is extremely expensive box and is usually "hard" used.
G-50s are readily available with a price range from 1500 to 3500
If you dealing with a 911 TBO part is more hard to locate and much much more expensive.

Rgds to all,
Jim
