Autometer Speedometer
Mechanical or electric? I am going to install Topline disk breaks so I really don't know which way to go.

From what I understand, Autometer's speedo's are made to fit up against the american trannies (Ford, Chevy), so your biggest problem is the speedo's accuracy. I have a mechanical Ultra-lite in my 1302, with Topline's disk brakes, and 17in rims. The speedo runs about 10mph slower than the car's actual speed. I asked the local race shop about the electric, but they said the senders are made to bolt onto an American car Transmission, so there's not really a way to fit it right up to your left brake. I've been trying to figure out this problem for almost a year now (haven't been driving the car much, but when I do I have no speedo). The best I can figure, since I already have the mech-drive speedometer, is take the speedometer to a shop that can pull the guage apart and replace the drive gear with a smaller one, to make the needle turn up faster.

You have the same set up I am building. I am surprised that there is no way to calibrate the speedo. Hmmm. Oh well, all my other gauges are Autometer and the stock speedo won't look right to me.

I used the 5 inch tach and 3 5/8 (right size? Can't remember...) speedo.
The tach only recquired the speedo hole to be spread out a little bit (cut the lip from inside the dash and then bend outward). As for the speedo, I was originally using one of those Empi dash guage panels, but the panel needed to be shaved a bit in the biggest hole. After that, there wasn't enough room for the 2 5/16 guages (the lips around these autometer guage-faces are pretty big), so I fabbed my own panels. I'll try to post some pics of my setup soon., But it'll be out of the car, since I'm still finishing the paint work... DAVID MANN |

The tach- and speedometer combination as well as the others listed on that page are interesting option(s). I didn't see the size listed, however, to determine if this would be a good 1302 or 1303 gauge, or both.
I assume for a street application one would opt for the 9k RPM tachometer as there is little difference for the needle on the 15k for the 0-7k range ... or am I revealing my ignorance here? -René |

Mechanical speedos can be made to work by installing a gear reduction box in the cable. Any decent speedometer shop can figure out the ratios needed to get it to read correctly. The gear boxes are not too expensive.
