Pete,

Empi in fact makes two different styles of drive flanges. The ones with the "HD" bolts (3/8) and ones with stock (M8) I went through this myself. I eventually got a pair with the M8 thread. I think Greg got mine through Rancho. I know Cip1 only lists the 3/8.

You should be able to drill out the CVs if that's the route you go. In a drill press, use a slow rpm (200 or slower) and a fast feed on the handle. To my recollection CVs are case hardened on the wear surfaces for about 1/32 or so. So you shouldn't have to worry about contacting that. If in fact there are a few hard spots, you may need to sharpen the drill a few times. Just sucks that you'll have to clean and repack each one to ensure no chips get lodged in there! Best of luck!

Alex

PS I have stock axles/cvs and flanges you can borrow for the trip if that helps.

3/8" is closer in size to 10 mm, so you should have enough meat there to drill them out and rethread. What a biotch that is ... good luck with it.

cheers

Sounds good. 2pm? What about Bryan? Meet you further down the road at a service center?

Yeah I can meet up at hwy 25,
ED - where do you live?

It is possible that I have the gold car sold tonite, if that is the case then I might be breaking the "dubs only rule"

Bryan, I'm up in Caledon. I've sent a p.m. to Lanner, to find out if I can maybe leave my car at his place, and get a ride down to Milton from there.

thx,
Ed N.

yeah i pick up the porsche tonight from steve at MPS, he had to tear down the entire left bank to get all the bottom studs out.
Turns out that engine has never been torn down since it was built in 1980 and still has a hone!
Cost more than I expected, but its done right .... now I'm poor

Drilled out the CV's last night. Went well with a carbide drill bit.

Today got the driveshafts, trans, and engine back in. All solo. Boy am i sore!

Snapped a 12pt socket on the CV bolts, so the passenger side is finger tight untill i get another at CT in the morning. Pulled the shifter out as it wasn't shifting properly(hopefully its not the trans ). Hope to get it all working by noon tommorrow.

If not, i'll be rolling in the other dub, the TDI.

Weather is calling for rain all day.......

So.... 2pm at the Tim's on Hwy 25, north of the 401.

Pete

Throwing in the towel.

Can't get the trans to neutral. Can get what i think is R-2-4 but no neutral-1-3. Tried 2 shifters, and a pair of vice grips on the trans shaft. Something's not right. Need to pull the nosecone and see what's up.

It'll all come out again on Monday.

See'ya later.

Pete

I had fun, that was my first ride ever in a Split Bus. Thanks everyone for putting up with my newbie questions and comments.

Will post up some photos once I get them unloaded from my camera.

cheers
