stock trans strength

how would a stock tranny hold up when faced with more horsepower...probably only 100-120, but more than stock. will it allow the engine to open up all the way into the triple digits or will the length of the gears limit it...thanks for the help..........-nick

If your trans in your 74 is the original SSC, you will be fine with it the way VW built it. It has the indestructable 9 tooth mainshaft, a steel 1-2 shift fork, and stronger spider gears.
With 120 hp you should be able to do 110mph easy.

Im guessing that i have about 100hp flat, if even that and ive had my car up to about 100mph. I ran out of power before gears. I was still running about 2500, but i hit the inclined side of an overpass and saw my friend braking infront of me like ther was a cop there.... There was.

You'd better get a new tachometer, yours is way off. A stock geared Bug will be doing around 5000 rpm at 100mph.

The lowest RPM's Ive seen someone run at high speeds was with an aftermarket 3.44 R & P and an .82 4th gear. He was at 3200 RPMs at about 85.

A 3.88 R & P tranny with stock .89 4th gear and 25 3/4" tall rear tire will do 55 mph at 2500 rpm.

That same 3.88 tranny with stock .89 4th gear and 25 3/4" tires will do 100 mph at 4600 rpm's.

Ive managed 130km/h with my old 1300 cc
and 155-160 km/h with my 1776.
1303 73 beetle with completely stock gearbox and 165/80r15 tyres.
i got 100km/h@3800, but the car wont go anymore than155km/h on the straight at about 5300rpms. I believe i got to sort a fuel lack prob first and then i ll post again
