April 12th is good .. supposed to be +12 deg C. and I'll be driving the Bug.
Pete, Bring the rods ! .. where are you taking the oil temp with the DS system ? I have the stock 914 "Taco" plate used for sensing oil temp if any one wants it $20, does not include the VDO temp sender. Since this is now a DS motor, I'm thinking the temp could be taken in the tank ? or should it be in the path where the oil would be hottest ? Like right after the scavenge stage, before the oil cooler ? Thanks, Sandeep |

I'll try to be there for the 12th, the bug won't be though still waiting for the tranny (seven weeks!).
Pete, can you bring the oil cooler (if you still have it?). Cheers, Dave

Sandeep, i'm taking my oil temp right at the bottom of the sump plate. i figured why record the temp after its cooled? i want to know the temp of the oil in the motor. the sender threads into where the drainplug was.
i'll bring the rods and oil cooler. to get some more people out, i posted on the vwvortex site in the canada regional, and aircooled sections as "GTA aircooled VW GTG/club". i cut and pasted the info from Alex 's meeting sticky. http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeroforum?id=94 http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeroforum?id=9

Heya Pete,
I figure if your dry sump is doing its job, the sump should be close to empty most of the time, thus giving you a lower reading than you actually should be getting. I take mine at the pulley side releif valve, that way it gets a constant flow of oil and i know the oil temp as it enters the case before its used by the engine. bry

I agree with CLKWRK on the oil temp in the case.
Don't you want to know the temp as the oil exits the scavange side of the pump, before the oil cooler ? I would think this is the hottest oil temp location. With a turbo, this temp will definately be higher becasue it will include the oil from the turbo, and not be a true indicator of engine oil temp. Right now, I have a thermostat with fan for the cooler, and I know when the fan kicks on, the oil temp is 180F. Sandeep |

While my car is running, the oil always checks in at least half full. What are the the oil levels supposed to look like in a drysump setup?
When i'm cold, the oil level rises in the motor, and the tank gets really low. When the motor is hot, the tank is almost full, and the motor is like half. Quote:
Could be wrong but it makes sense to me. This is how i have everything plumbed: tank-> straight into inlet of pump unobstructed->which goes into motor->out of motor into second stage of pump-> out the pump to the front of the car-> into the oil cooler->back to the rear shelf-> into filter -> into tank all with 3/4 hose/pipe.

I'll see you guys on the 12th...but not in the bug, still waiting to fix the tranny/axels issue. Good thing is that I have the parts lined up, now just have to go and do it
