901 in a VW pick up

I just bought a 1970 VW pick up with a 2.7 Porsche 911 motor and 901 5 speed tranny in it. The shifter is an Empi style trigger model and I have to pull the ring to engage both reverse and first gear. I've heard that a Porsche 911 shifter can be installed in a beetle with a 901 gear box. Has anyone on this forum done that? Pulling the ring to engage first every time I stop or come close to stopping is a PITA. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You can install the 901 shifter but you'll end up with a worse shifter than you have now.
If you look at the Empi shifter, you should be able to modify it so you can get 1rst without having to use the triigger and also make it work as a lock out jsut for reverse, even from 1rst gear.
I was going to do this with my Scat Drag fast when I was runnign it in my Oval but never got around to doing it.
