Question Vapor from breather box ?

Hi All,

I have an observation and a question:

I was driving my bug at illegal speeds on the weekend and had to fill up with gas. After my fill up, I went to check the oil level and noticed a vapor coming out of my breather box ... kind of like smoke, not alot of it, but a small amount, like from a cup of hot coffee.

I have a bugpack breather with 3 vent hoses... 1 to each valve cover and 1 to the block (Type 4 GA engine)

I checked the oil temp (VDO gauge taken from sump) and it was reading 190 deg so the oil was not getting too hot. Pressure after startup was 40 psi.

Could this be water being boiled out of the oil that is causing the vapor ? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Sandeep

Breather Vapour

Hi Sandeep ! Your vapour is most likely oil vapour. When the engine gets going the oil actually forms a fine mist which makes its way up the pushrod tubes out your vented covers and into your breather box. One engine builder made a rocker cover out of plastic and watched what happened as the RPMs increased and the rocker box fills up with oil!! Add a little engine heat from the valvetrain and thats what you get . Nothing to worry about. If your breather box fills up with oil, then it is more of a worry.

Not exactly answering your question, but your "bugpack breather box" is too small IMO. Its nice for chromed 1600 type 1's, but not for tuned 2 liter engines.
A real breather box should at least be of 1,5 ltr content to properly do its job.
Just my opinion of course...
Greetings,
Walter

Thumbs up

Thanks for the responses.

I will keep an eye on the oil level in the box and have been eyeing the CSP breather box. Not in the budget for this year but will make the upgrade winter 2003 !

CSP breather box

Well, I replaced that bugpack POS breather box with a proper 1.5 ltr box with 5 connections. I've had it on for about 2 weeks now and can offer the following comments:

My engine does not leak a drop ! Even after extended run times at 5000 rpm, NO LEAKS

The valve covers are also dry, and no more oil on my muffler Engine bay is also very clean.

I haven't had to add any oil in the last 2 weeks and the oil level is fine.

With the bugpack POS box, I had leaks at the valve covers, oil being spat up onto my firewall, muffler and the engine bay looked like a mess every week with oil all over the place.

Thanks for the note Wally. I recommend this mod to everyone !

The engine must be able to breathe. Not enough crankcase ventilation causes all sorts of issues and especially oil leakage... The pressure forces the oil out of any crack it can find..

Sandeep,
Do you have the website for CSP in north america? Also can you open the breather box to clean it? (or would you ever have to?) What valve covers are you running and did you have to "massage" the engine compartment to fit your engine. The reason I'm asking is because the valve covers on my engine are tight to the side of the engine compartment and getting them off with the breather hoses attached is a PITA.
See you at the meeting.
Cheers,
Dave

Hey Dave,

I don't have a site for CSP NA .. sorry. I got my box from Alex.

The box is totally sealed so you can't clean it .. I don't think you have to. I'm running the stock valve covers with bails .. it works, doesn't leak so I'm sticking with it. The PO tried to paint them red, but I will get them powdercoated black this winter. My breather hose is in the head (914 2.0), not in the valve covers so I don't have this problem.

No tweaking the engine compartment to get the engine in. I have about 1-1.5" clearance on each side.

See you at the meeting.

Sandeep

About that old breather box...

Do you still have the POS breather box? I really need one. I'm running a 40mm Weber on a stock 1600 DP and that size will do just fine w/ me.
I don't have scratch for cash so I've been looking for a cheap alternative. If you still have it could you make me a deal? heh.

CSP's Website

It's a German site, but with a version in english. Good site for technical info also; the wheel offset stuff is great - shows it graphically.
