Is this a bad idea?

So I've got the rear tranny mount turned around to move the suby ahead and I'm fitting the tranny in (T1) to build the front mount but the reverse light sender is hitting the torsion tube. I was thinking I could just cut into the torsion tube an inch or so to make clearance for it but also read that this might be a bad idea. Any suggestions? Is there somewhere else I could mount the sender?

I just removed the reverse switch and fitted the standard blanking plug, even that had to be ground down a bit to clear...

Thats kinda what I was thinking, but I still would like to have reverse lights, I'm planning on using a berg shifter but don't have it yet, I'm wondering if you could wire a switch into the shifter reverse button or something, just thinking outloud...

Do what Ricola said with the blanking plug. I saw a contraption made up on an early bug once. It was a door light switch mounted on a bracket on the shift coupling, when reverse was selected the switch touched the cover plate turning the lights on. The other way is a fairly rare part these days, its a sensor that fits on the speedo cable and turns the reverse lights on if the car moves backwards, it can take almost a complete wheel revolution for the lights to come on.

Thats a good idea with the door switch Steve, I'll have to play around with that a bit. I just got the tranny to where it needs to be today and now to get the timing covers to fit in there! tons of fun
