Got 5th Gear? Bug@5speed Conversion Kits

"The fairytale of the bad Porsche transmission" … that is how you could describe what so called insiders report about the installation of a Porsche transmission into a VW Bug for many years. They talk about an installation that is almost impossible, about transmission that you can’t shift, about gearboxes which are extremely loud and so on…

Relatively a new comer to the US market is Bug@5speed with our Porsche gearbox conversion kits. Bug@5speed is based out of Germany and has been in the business of demystifying the fairytale for many years. The conversion kits are designed and engineered to facilitate the installation of a Porsche gearbox into Type I IRS vehicles. Currently available are conversions kits for the 901, 914 as well as 915 transmissions for mounting into a Type I IRS vehicles. While these part are designed for the install into a Type I IRS chassis, we have had many customers leverage our components for installs in everything from Bus applications to Type 3 applications.

Our Kits for the 901/914 conversion include a nose cone (30 mm shorter than the original one), a front traverse, axle flanges (for either beetle cv’s or for Porsche 944/Bus cv’s), clutch cable mount plate, clutch cable connector, adjusted clutch lever, a rear traverse and our 5-speed-shifter.

Kits for the 915-conversion kits are similar and include a shortened nose cone (20 mm shorter), axle flanges with Porsche 944/Bus diameter, a front aluminum cast traverse, rear traverse and our 5 speed shifter.

Our Products can be purchased as a complete KIT or individually based on customers’ needs.

Earlier this year I bought some parts for a 901 install in a German look project, most notably the nosecone and front traverse mount. I haven't had a chance to install them yet (time, always time ) but the parts are beautifully executed and Alex was extremely helpful with the transaction. I would definitely recommend their consideration if you're looking at performing this conversion.

Mr. Bill,
'57 body, '69 chassis, 901 trans, 912 engine, yaddy-yaddy-yaddy...

Denizen224,
What is your solution for the output flange / axle combo? also have you converted to 944 trailing arms?
Have you installed the parts yet?

Hello, I like your products. Very well done, I have a 915 Transmission. I will be installing it into a 1303 with early 944 trailing arms. At present I am trying to do the investigative part, on how will I get the clutch to apply and release. As a matter of fact, I see where you have addressed the issue of fitment. The transmission that I have linkage applied from the bottom. I have noted were Walter was successful in using a hydraulic slave for his G-50. How do you address the clutch apply and release in your application for the 915 transmission?

Lastly, I see that you offer a lower trans oil cooler port. Do you have a diagram of how the trans oil and pump/sump is supplied for your kit. Although my needs are of a high perfromance daily driver, I want my car to last, if at all possible.

Hi Effvee,

the oilcooler plate is being installed instead of the original shift plate. It has two threads, one for the oil line and another one for either a temp sender, or a temp switch (to actuate the electrical oilpump that you use). The return oil line is being made into the filling plug at the side. You can get a plug with a thread for the return line.

We mainly convert the pulled type clutch of the Porsche to a pushed type one. We use a type 4 228 mm flywheel, a custom made clutch disc and a reinforced clutch pressure plate. We have a throw out bearing guidance tube that fits the 915 on one side and the T3 throw out bearing on the other side.

Hope to have answered your questions.

Alex: thanks for informing me.

Martin

@ jmd,

yes sorry the site was down. The site was moved to another hosting service and was down for 2 days. My tel. no. is working - no problems at all!

Please dial: 0049-6681/9170742

Might be that the contact form on my site is still not working, cause the update to the next version of Joomla caused problems with this part of the site. Hope to have it fixxed again soon.

Until then: info@bugat5speed is working like always.

Once more, sorry for these problems!

Martin
