Subaru engine motor mounts? hang it out like a vw?
Hello all,
This is my first post, but I've been checking this site out alot recently, reading everything I can. Lots of good people with a library of good info. I am wondering how you mount the engine on the subaru conversion? I've seen so many different sites about people doing the swap, but only one or two have gone into how the engine is hung. Can it be left swinging from the trans like my beetle engine, or do I have to fab up longer trans horns to reach the engine or? I'm fairly confident of doing everything else for this swap except this bit I haven't been able to figure out. I really don't want to do a pan off, because I'm going to be doing this in one of those rental storage units and am not going to have very much room. (one of the cruddy things about apartment living, no room for anything) So.. any suggestions out there amongst the VW garage engineers? Thanks so much. Chris |

Hi
Welcome along. Most people using a stock type transmission use the factory mounts. Steve

thanks for the reply Steve.
So you would suggest just mounting it up like a standard beetle engine with only the transmission bolts carrying the weight of the whole engine? If that works ok, it would definatly cut alot of fabwork out of my project. Also, does anybody know how much horsepower and torqe a stock trans will put up with? I miss driving my car. I've been riding my Vulcan Nomad all summer, been great, but its getting close to winter and I'd love to have something around me that resembles heat on my trips in to work at 6am. Even bug heat would be welcome... |

Hi
I think at least you would need heavy duty mounts, a berg style mid mount and Kafer cup bars. The transmission depends on the nut behind the wheel. Check out http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com in the non VW engine conversions and also http://www.vwkd.co.uk/bb/ Steve

First of, when using a shortened sump on an EJ engine there won't be enough room for the stock Subaru engine mounts.
Second, I'd say the need to have "extra" mounts depends on the power of the engine you have. If you have a simple EJ20 it might work but for higher powered Subaru engines it might not. My EJ20TT for example, when the engine is mounted just like a normal Bug engine it moves to much when driving away from a stand stil. I've solved this by making 2 4mm think brackets that mount in place of the stock mounts and attach to the rear trans mount. I'll try to make some pics of it next week. |

I think that is only the case with the bug@5speed sump... RJES' and the small car sump are designed to use the subaru mounts and obviously most steel ones are bespoke to each application.

That is correct, we had a Vanawagon customer who we were dealing with, and was not able to use the subaru mounts as the sump did not allow them to clear..

Well, because of budget concerns, Just assume I'm going to use everything in as "stock" configuration as possible. I may at some point after I get it driving on the road upgrade to a turbo, h/d transaxle, and upgraded power mods on the engine, if I get the urge. I know there is somewhat of a clearance issue on the stock engine oilpan, but I can live with that temporarily, just have to be aware when driving on these horrible louisiana roads. I don't suppose there's enough sheetmetal on the back of the bug engine bay to attach any kind of good mount or stabilizer for the engine? Tom72, what you were talking about seems interesting too. I'm not going to be dragracing this thing anytime soon, I just need a reliable daily driver. Photo's would be a good help. I have had my car for about 5 years but have never done any heavier maintenance on it than a new starter and brake work, so I'm not as familiar with the layout as I should be. Ive been reading my Hayne's manual, but you folks seem to make alot more sense lol.

im just using a kafer style brace with mine.
thats all most here in aus use by old bug which had a rotary engine had the 2 forks strenghtened with box section RHS but a subaru is alot heavier than a rotary
