V8 bug
I am thinking about puting a v8 in a bug. It would be mid engine with a manual tranny to a danna 60 rear end. What year bug should I put it in? I am worried about the distance between the front seat and the center of the stock axle. I think if I use a porshe g40 transaxle I can eliminate most of my problems.
Any input would help. Mike |

This should answer all your questions. It just happens to be in a Lambo lookalike, but your doing the same thing. Look at the Audi tranny.

V8 bug
I am trying to keep it as stock looking as possible. I was going to try to use a porshe tranny and stock swing arms. We have a guy that builds custom drive shafts for anything. I haven"t figured out how i am going to hide the v8 in the back seat. I was going to just cover it with some steel panels that have been undercoated to reduse road noise. I need to know how long the porshe tranny is from the mateing surface to the fearward most point. My biggest fear is that i am going to have to extend the bug because i don't want it to far foward. I will be using an electric waterpump. Haven't figured out where to put the radiator. I don't want to put in in the front and have to cut big holes for air. Any help is appreciated.

Which porsche tranny do you want to use?

Unless you literally have money to burn, consider the Audi tranny. These crazy projects often don't get as far as you'd like, and spending less on the tranny is a good start. Porsche is great, but if you have any troubles, it's going to be hard to get parts and those parts WILL be expensive.

Maybe another option is an Olds Toronado transaxle or other GM V8 front drive(if you want an auto).never seen it done in a bug but I have seen it done in a CRX and other cars.

i am waiting for a reply back from the guy as we speak so hopefuly i will get them soon.i myself am debating the same thing. but i have it worked out with him to actualy build me one as my welding skills pretty much suck.but if you dont want to go that route try www.prostreetbug,com .they have a front engine vw frame you can buy in three seperate ways.plans, pre welded with no suspension and fully welded with suspension. they also have fiberglass bodies for both vw chassis and there v8 chassis.

I'm in no way an expert in anything to do with this but would it not be better to use a gearbox from a Boxter instead of a 911 (assuming that they are different)
With the Boxter being mid engined you will beable to mount the V8 that much further forward, therefore better weight distribution. As for the radiator you could mount it in the engine bay either ducting air from underneath with an alloy undertray of by fitting air ducts like the yellow bug on page 1 of the general gallery.
