Porsche exhaust?
I have a 2 litre in my '72 1302 (Super Beetle) with BAS exhaust system. I want to modify it to run with a Porsche, or similar style, cat-back exhaust under the rear apron. Anyone tried this kind of modification or have any feedback on back pressure or lack thereof? Also,I am running dual 40mm Webers & CB Performance large valve heads.

In addition to Spike's questions, I am curious about your rear valance (apron). I don't remember ever seeing one with the fuel-injection year bulge and a wide gap rather than a one- or two-exhaust gap.

The apron was most likely modified to accept the boxster-style exhaust tip. I just bought a dual cut-out late model rear apron on ebay & am debating about doing the same modification.

I really like this setup. I never thought of modifying a new exhaust for IV hookup, I need exhaust badly and found the same porsche muffler for a good price.. Is there any way You could post some more pictures of the pipework. Im assuming you are using the stock header?

Well I got a little anxious and decided to be bold about the exhaust. I ended up driving to virginia where I picked up a clean boxster exhaust and got some new pipes made to mate it to the 2.0 IV. I was contemplating cleaning the baffels for a more throaty sound, but did not want to until fully testing the sound of the stock muffler. MAN what a difference. I have never been in my bus this quiet before. I have a sweet tone at speed and the engine is alot more steady with the smooth flow. I was worried it may be a little restrictive (still testing) but performance actually seems to have improved a little. After rebuild this winter with some more output Ill see if the baffles will go or not. At least I know my exhaust wont ever rust off.

if i remember correctly these exhaust boxes have a mechanism to vary the flow path inside them... a free flowing mode for high rpm, and a more restrictive for low rpm like in traffic etc to lower dB levels and emissions
This is electronically controlled... I remember seeing one at my exhaust guy and it was a pain to install and hook up. Dont know if its year and/or model specific though Chris

There are no electrical connections unless its a mechanical valve mechanism located somewhere on each side. If anyone knows of a cross section through a (97?) boxster exhaust, I could use that to know where to cut to remove the baffles.
