Transmission mounts

So I'm planning to 'flip' the rear transmission mount so I can move my motor forward and hopefully get the clearance to close the lid.

I figured this time I'd actually do some research in stead of the usual procedure of buying crap only to find out it doesn't work once you have it in your hands

So, moving the box forward means I'm losing my front mount, so I'll need one of those mid mounts.
I've found the following kits:

http://www.cip1.ca/ProductDetails.as...e=ACC-C10-4785

http://www.cip1.ca/ProductDetails.as...de=C26-311-204

http://www.cip1.ca/ProductDetails.as...e=ACC-C10-4792

Any suggestions on which one would work best ?

Any other suggestions ? I read/heard about the Berg front/mid mount (thanks Rich!) , but can't find it in North America ?

I checked the Gene Berg website, but can't even find it on there...

Rob.

Have this quiet strap mid mounted on the trans. Had bought a solid mount kit too. Used solid mounts on the trans, and the quiet straps on the midmount. Worked well. But i had the solid front mount. No front mount? i have no clue.

There are lots of things that need attention when moving trans fwd.

this needs to be shortened: Clutch wire, throttle wire, shift linkage.

And your fan housing wil probably touch firewall, depending on setup.

Exhaust system need rebuild or lengthening.

and probably more that you wil find out when starting, so be prepared...

Rob,

If you plan on removing the front mount, none of those items will be a suitable substitute unfortunately.

None of those items are meant to support that kind of load, only to add support to the front mount.

Something you could try is using this kit you suggested: http://www.cip1.ca/ProductDetails.as...de=C26-311-204
Then weld it to the frame horns, some modifying would be necessary. Or figure out a way to bolt it to the frame horns and use the included rubber bumpers so that it isn't "solid mounted"

I'm using a berg style mid mount like Alex linked to, no front mount, german rubber rear mounts with a heavy duty rear cross-member with tranny strap. For added torsional support I have a 3-bar kafer brace from Lanner. Its not on the road yet but there are a few people out there running a similar setup.

Other things you need to do are grind down the webbing on the trans nose cone and get a plug to fit the back-up light sender because it will hit the torsion tube. Thus no back-up lights unless you hook up a switch somewhere else like on the shifter.

What I really need is something like this: (Rich, I hope you don't mind me using a pics from your site. http://www.ricola.co.uk)

It's close to the one Alex and Mike pointed out, but it seems to have better mounting fot the framehorns..

Rob,

The pic you posted is right on the money. I'm not 100% but I'm fairly certain that you could use that instead of a front mount. Using any other tranny "supports" wouldn't be a bad idea either. Wheel hop will kill your tranny in quick order, so there is no such thing as too much support!

Keep us posted,

Alex

Hi

Didn't the Berg 5 speed kits just use their mounts like the one from Ricolas site as a front mount? Do the Berg 5 speed kits suffer from tramp?

I think you indeed the best can use some kind of midmount, but then better the one that rob posted, because this one is mounted on the trans with more than ONLY two points.

I made my own, but i still will use the front mount

CSP got one from gene berg (maybe you have to change the rubbers for solid mounts, but time will tell.

Hi Bruce

I w i l l s p e a k s l o w l y

The Berg 5 speeds use the above type of mounting system (the one in Robs post), do cars with 5 speed Berg gearboxes using this style of mounting system suffer from axle tramp?

That's what I'm guessing

EDIT: I found these two definitions which are pretty much the same, and as far as I can tell can't happen on a VW?

In leaf-spring cars, wheelhop or axle tramp is caused by the leaf spring “wrapping up” into an S-curve shape as the result of torque input. As the spring hits maximum wrapup, the spring rate also increases radically. At that point, the tire bounces off the pavement and unloads the spring, allowing it to unwind and then rapidly wrap up again.

Definition: A form of wheel hop that occurs on cars with live axles, caused by the axle repeatedly rotating slightly with the wheels and then springing back.
