944 disc brakes on 1969 Karmann ghia front?

Hi.

This is an excellent forum. For those of you who are old enough, remember what it was 20 years ago when we were fixing up our vw's! You could only ask other people you knew, and if you heard about some modification done far away, you couldn't get any details of it. Internet has changed everyhing.

Back to the question:

I have a 1969 Karmann Ghia conv., and I have bought a complete set of porsche 944 N/A brakes (1984), (backingplate, rotors, calipers, hub).
Fitting the rear brakes will not be any problem at all, it is basically bolt-on. But the problem arises with the front brakes.

My Ghia has originally disc brakes in front, but how can I fit the the easiest way?
Do I have to maschine the hubs so that they can use VW-bearings?

Do I also have to make an adapter so the calipers will fit? Or would another model of the 944 brakes be more fit?

I really hope you guys can help me clear things out.

Regards,
Espenq

He might be out, and not checking email yet, give him time, he will answer. He did my '87 944T brake set-up. Very nice machine work.

Hi Espen,

shoot me an e-mail and I can send you a scan from a web-site nla. Please send to guttorm(at)gmx.net

An old source for this info is the German book Bodengruppentherapie by Helmut Horn:

The better route to take would to machine a spacer to use stock vw bearings and races in the Porsche front hubs. There will be a gain in offset. Along with the rear. Lanner already has the spacers figured out, although I believe he would have to machine your hubs for the grease seal. And shorten them just so they'll fit on vw spindles. After that he might be able to mount a caliper braket on your stock spindles. You'll have to ask. I asked about 944 NA fronts a while back, and that is about everything I remember from his emails. They were clear and easy to understand. I hope it helps.

His site is a good referance too.

Offset is a something you should keep in mind, the rear 944 NA brakes add track (move the rear wheels away from the suspension) to the rear wheels. The front will also add track. I bring it up because I'm building a Ghia.

Good luck.
