I seem to recall if its an early trans with the vacuum operated lock you can just fix it engaged with a piece of wire.

I was looking at this box too and though hmmm.. I wonder if it could be made to fit a vw and still maintain a rear engine (not mid engine) configuration.

Can anyone confirm that?

I guess the diff would need to be swapped over to the other side of the box and of course the center diff disconnected.

Cheers,

Ian

swop da diff

The early audi trans can be made to work in a beetle and all early and late share the same bolt pattern but only the early type to 80 if I remember correctly is worth the trouble. the later type trans has too many difficulties to make it a worth while proposition. It is a very strong trans and if you manage to hook up the shifter mechanism without going nuts then let me know please. Oh by the way the gear ratios are ok but 4th is a little low
