901 in a bus/pickup

Is anyone running a Porsche 901 tranny in a bus or pickup? I'm using an Empi shifter for my 901 tranny in my pickup and I hate it. I have to pull the ring every time I engage first gear (the front shifter assembly is VW, not Porsche). I bought the vehicle with the 901/2.7 motor installed. The original owner said that he did not install a Porsche shifter assembly because the throws would be way too long.
Any imput would be appreciated.

Shifter stuff

Have a look at the lockout mechanism on the shifter, you should be able to remove a bit which will allow you to get first but not select reverse without pulling up the lockout.
I was going to do the same on my Scat Dragfast but ended up selling the rolling chassis.
I wouldn't bother fitting the Porsche shifter, they're really not that great. You're probably a step ahead already in directness.
