Don't know how well it drives on the road yet - it's still not quite finished & road legal. But it already wants to go! Shouldn't be that far off finished - i spent yesterday putting in what i hope are the last wires (shift light, fan operation light) and making up the handbrake cables for the rear discs.
Radiator is in wheel arch behind wheel - first pic is before shielding was in place, second pic is with shielding, which scoops air up as well to ensure it gets good air. Radiator is a one-off in Ally by Pace products to my design, and is a work of art! I didn't put it up front as I had already done the front end by the time i decided to go WBX route. The fan is controlled by the ECU as well. Will post up more pics later if y'all want? Moog

Hi
Moog thats nice looking conversion. I did one in 1988, started off with 46 IDAs then I went EFI with a turbo. Now Ive sold all that and Im going 2.0 STI. Steve With IDAs With turbo

Steve c you had a really nice car. Now that you have modified your chassis to accept the g50 gearbox i think you also weakened the chassis. If i was to go water cooled it would be a wasser engine.

Great pics Moog, very nice quality work but I'd still cut up the front for a rad Do you plan to stay swing axle? Rich

Hi
The 1302 I used to own had a very hard life, mainly from me and it started to crack the body. I still have to do more chassis stiffening to do on the 1303. I’m sure it will stronger than before when its finished. When I get a little further along I will start up a topic for the conversion I’m doing. Wasserboxers are great motors, I had very little trouble with mine, only the odd water pump or coolant hose letting go. But a WRX Subaru is a 21st century Wasserboxer with lots of aftermarket goodies available. Steve

I have kept it swing-axle on the Basis that it is a GT beetle - for those who don't know (those outside of UK?) the GT beetle was a limited edition spec, and the only time they used the 1600 engine & unique ratios in a swing-axle / 1300 shell in the UK. Only 2500 made, & only 10% this colour, so part of my plan was to keep many of the original GT features, and that includes sticking to the high-ratio swing-axle box. Basically, i'm trying to create a 21st Century GT Beetle. SteveC - Loved your car - would like to have seen it for real! It was part of the inspiration for this engine conversion. Cheers Moog

Sure, it's easy...
Change the 228 flywheel to a 215mm T4 (or 210mm or 200mm T4) and it bolts straight up to the gearbox - easy. The hard part is then working out how you are going to do the cooling system, and what carbs / injection to use - my 40 Weber-Alpha throttle bodies are on Wasserboxer IDF manifolds with the tops cut & rewelded & re-tapped to turn the throttle bodies around and fit the DHLA pattern. Fuel injection requires High pressure fuel pumps as well as a low pressure system, plus returns into the fuel tank. LOTS of wiring for the ECU. Throttle linkage is a much butchered T1 pull-style. Stock starter struggled to turn over the 10.5 compression engine, so that is now new. Etc, etc, etc...
Just work through it methodically and you'll get there. But you do need patience and to think laterally at times. Expensive part for me was the custom made radiator in ally - £400...
