Talking good deal ?! or bad ? & T4 help

I am supposed to go pick up a 2.0L outta 74 bus (complete) this weekend ,I am trading my 1600 w/ blown #3 STRAIGHT ACROSS ! It's fuel injected but has a progressive carb manifold to go with it.Guy says its just been sitting and was pulled from a wrecked bus,and spins freely.Anything specific I should look for ,cracks leaks ,missing parts ?

Next can someone explain what needs tobe done to fit this motor into my 1302 ? I know it needs the up right conversion and am unsure what tin is used !?Also what else needs to be modded ?

Thanx

Rich

well unfortunately you may or may not like what I am going to tell you at that motor.

The bus 2.0 is one of the least desireable motors in its stock format. First because it has very small valves and second because it only make about 67 HP compared to 95 HP in a 2.0 914 T4 or even 75 or 80 HP in a 1.7 or 1.8 914 T4.

They built those motors to have mostly torque to push a heavy bus around.

If you buy it to rebuild it, (with domed or flat pistons, llarger valves & solid lifters), you may end up alot happier

I do plan on rebuilding it ! I'm not looking to throw a stocker in my bug ,that would be pretty much pointless.I was more concerned about his motor being a good STARTING point for a mild (130 hp) hi-po motor ? Every Type 4 powered bug cant be runnin around with a 914 spec T4 ! So, vujade, whats your opinion now ?

if you are going to rebuild it, that is fine.
I would probably replace the heads with either 1.8 or 2.0 914 heads.

I didnt mean to say that only a 2.0 914 motor was good.
I only meant that it was the way to go if you were going to go with a stock running motor and not rebuild it.

Hang on a minute.... problem.... a 1974 bus had a 1.8, not a 2.0.

72-73 = 1.7, 74-75 = 1.8, 76-83 = 2.0.

Take care,

ok , I'll have to do alittle more research with that guy about the motor ! If it is indeed a 2.0L and he got the years mixed up great , if not is a 1.8L a bad starting point for what I'm trying to do ?

Buy this conversion manual, it will tell you everything you need to know to convert a T4 to upright.

I believe the Gods are on my side ! I talked to the guy and he said he wasnt 100% sure what year the bus was so I asked if he could get me the case number , and it reads GD 046467. I did some research and it is supposed to be a 76-77 Transporter motor ,F.I. , solid lifter cam ! Whataya think !?

If the price is right, get it.

Most of the stuff is the same. Then you could build a 1911 or 1971 easily.

The tricky part is the upright conversion.
