Installing an 091 is difficult. The shift rod exits way below the pan, so you would have to do some significant fab work to hook up to it.
The bell housing needs to be switched for an earlier one to work easier with a Bug engine.
The best trans to use is a 72-75 002 trans then get the Berg intermediate housing. This housing takes a stock Bug nose cone which bolts right up to the stock shift rod.

Unfortunately the Berg intermediate housing only works with the 002 trans.
Its too bad Berg always seemed to ignore the best VW had to offer in transmissions. They chose the 002 over the 091 for the Bus into Bug conversion, and they chose to use all the early keyed junk in the manufacture of the 5 speed T1 trans.

You can upgrade the 002 Bus 'box to take any 091 diff by simply installing the 091 diff with the 091 screw in diff bearing retainers.

The shift rod exits above where a typical T1 does. This puts the hockey stick ABOVE the tunnel. You can use the mickey mouse offset adaptor, or run a shift rod above the tunnel, install a new shifter box above the tunnel and loose the E-brake handle.

Oh ya, I just saw one again yesterday. The shifter is way high, its the front mount of an 091 that's really low.
