1968 bug that needs a 5 speed.

I own a 1968 bug with irs front and swing axles in back. I dont have a irs rear on my bug. Would like to do the 5 speed transmission conversion, but don't know what I can do and use to make it work. Plus I can't afford another pan (irs) due to space where I am at and family. If anyone has any information or point me in the right direction that would be great. The main reason for the 5 speed is I drive the freeway alot and some long distance driving with the kids.

You can use a freeway flyer or put a 3.88 R/P with a 0.82 4th. in your trans.

If you can't afford an IRS pan, you can't afford a 5 speed.

The 2 most common 5 speeds to use are the Berg 5 and the Porsche 901 5 speed. By the time you rebuild a Porsche trans ($$$$) and install it with all the extensive fabrication work, you will be into it for at least $2-3K.
The Berg 5 can be made with swing axle to bolt into your car, but the cost of the parts alone are near $2k, then you have to get it built. Any upgrades you need will easily push it well over $3k.

You need to spend some time in this forum reading the past topics. The conversion to a 901 5 speed has been covered in depth.

"Extensive fabrication" is not required, you DO need to convert to IRS but that is possible too and acually more work than the 5 speed.

Compared to installing a swing axle Berg 5, installing a 901 5 speed requires "extensive fabrication".

Got some good news, my friend just located at 69 irs pan that is in really great shape, no body. So it looks like someone is watching out for me. Don't know when I will start, due to work and injury. But when I do, I invite you people up when I do this. I will keep you updated and let you know when it will be started.

It will be a much smoother project with an IRS pan and if you get a good 901 from your friend. Remember that the 901 like Swepco gearbox oil.

Make sure the pan has a title and that you get it...definitely look into state law concerning body swaps.
