Hi, currently have front disc brakes, want rears too!!

any suggestions on where to get rear disc brakes?? I'm planning on putting a pretty powerful engine in the back, and well, i'll need to stop harder now....

I already have front disc, dont ask me what brand, since the owner before me put them on....

I'm also thinking of getting some bigger front discs, since i'll need to stop harder once I finally get the engine.

well two kits come to mind....

CB Performance makes a nice kit with parking brake for under $400

or try CSP they have a nice cross drilled kit for around $600

otherwise you could always go with a 944 rear brake conversion using parts from a Porsche 944

Re: Hi, currently have front disc brakes, want rears too!!

I never got too interested in the 944 brake conversion as they are pretty rare here but I heard that the 944 rear disk conversion its an easy job, nearly bolt on.Could someone explain me, in big lines, what parts (other then the 944 and bugs) are needed??Also witch is the best 944 model to take the rears from?

thanks,
Martin

Hi Martin,

You need pre 86 944 parts (non turbo if you want them to fit under stock wings). They will fit to either swingaxle or IRS without too much trouble at all.

The easiest way is to buy both rear trailing arms and brake assemblies complete as you will require all of the parts except the trailing arms anyway and you can simply unbolt everything and transfer it directly to your beetle. I paid 50 pounds sterling a side without calipers.

You have a choice of calipers and discs. I opted for the turbo discs and calipers for front and rear, but be careful. You don't want the rears to be out braking the fronts! Also the turbo front conversion isn't all that easy as there are a few clearance problems.

Good luck, hope this is of some help.

Andy.

Thanks! I'll do some research.

So you are saying that with stock bug disks at front and 944 disks at rear(non turbo) the rear braking power could be to much?

Usually a car is configured for a 60-40 front/rear or 70-30 bias so that hard braking during cornering doesn't lock up the back wheels. The master cylinder creates the bias by pushing more fluid to the fronts than the rears, however, if you have porsche 4-pots on vented turbo discs at the back and standard front calipers you could run into a few problems!

You can get 2-pot porsche brembos to work with 944 discs, but I'd recommend similar brakes front to back.

Good Luck!

Andy.

Thanks Andy!

One more question, I saw this parts list on the Michael Ghiahttp://www.performanceghia.com/

a list of parts for the conversion:
"
4 disks
4 hubs
4calipers(single pot)
2 rear backing plates/caliper mounting brackets
2 N/S 944 handbrake cables
2 beetle hand brake cables
2 crimp-on ends from Speedy Cables
2 cb performance dropped spindles
one set of beetle bearings
one set of bearings adapters
2 hub seals"

I quess the dropped spindles are not necessary right?

Hi Martice,

Using dropped spindles is the easiest way to fit 944 discs. All you have to do is cut off the bottom lug and postion the caliper, then drill and tap your M12 bolt hole. Finally make a thin spacer to centre things up and bolt it all together. See Alex's helpful tech article.

I opted for the standard disc spindles for two reasons. Firstly, I wanted to use the larger 12" Turbo discs and later calipers. Secondly, I wanted the caliper to be upright when seen through the spokes, not on the bottom of the disc as with the CB route. I had to design and make a bracket, spot face the spindle, and clearance the bottom trailing arms. It was a lot more hassle but in my opinion, well worth it!

Good luck and let me know how you get on.

Andy.
