Has anyone considered this conversion or have done it?

I have considered it, but decided on the 915. My friends use it. Pretty much the strongest VW trans. 4.56 R&P. My friend is actually selling me one for my Bus project that I don't have yet.

The reason I was asking was because while looking through some old pictures I came across this 091 that has a modified nose cone with a CV attachment to the shaft for 4WD. This may just be a Vanagon Syncro nose cone.

that looks like the box out fo that 4 wheel drive rally bug. I think the nosecone was a one-off and it used some sort of Nissan front diff...

It's been so long I don't really remember but I think it was a Saab front diff, was the car white or light blue. Can't remember the site.

good case

Hay Superman the 091 case is very strong, but the choice of gearing is very limited. Wheddle offer many parts for the 091 upgrades, even from three rib to five ribs. Diff carrier, gearing but no lower than I think .457 r&p. I going to go with a 915 when I get to that point. Look up Wheedle in the Hov VW ad, they also have a site but its not found in the Wheedle ad, do a search on Wheedle engerinering to see what parts are on hand.

I don't even think they offer anything but the stock R&P ratio for an 091. (That's why I didn't use it) Just to correct... its Weddle Engineering. Their site's been under construction for over a year now.

My only interest is the 4WD possibility, but that would require a tube frame.

It's such a shame that the Volkswagenwerk failed with their Type 82 Kommanderwagen (sp.?)

VAG managed it though
