VW Bug Tracktoy

Hello everybody.

Well, after reading and learning a lot here, I finally registered as a user and I wanted to share my little project with you guys.

It's a little side project, so it will take a while (Full time job and independant after hours. A house to renovate, a wife and kids that also need some attention -you guys know how it woks, I'm pretty sure of that ).

But now about the bug. The previous owner told that it used to be an old Belgian vw bug cup car that -when the bug cup stopped in the 90's - went to rallycross.

but now some pics of my find when I bought it.

It's a 12/1300 model beetle with IRS, discs front and rear, plexy windows, safety devices rollcage, ...

Well, the title said it all, even there isn't a beetle cup (in Belgium) anymore I want to make a track toy/racing beetle.

It's going to be a long project, when we find the time (and budget off course)

So if anyone has any ideas or comments at any time, don't hold back, just shoot.

We don't expect to be the fastest on track, we just want some fun building and racing it.

It just looks like a great start for a project!
Do you have any history on the car?

Thanks Walter,

for the moment I've got none of the cars history, but I'm still looking and asking around

and there are some good parts on the bug (also an early porche gearbox, that was shamefully messed up for the rallycross, you could see that on the first pic of my second post). So I hope it can live up to my expectations when finished

The front and rear were massacred during it previous life, so we put in some new parts

a friend donated an old rear part, so whe could make the complete rear easily removable (2x3 bolt should be enough I reckon)

quick fasteners on al 4 of the polyester wings. Mostly for fun, it took a while placing them, there's a first time for everything

and while we've got some spare time

this was just a test, it has to be done a bit better, but I like it allready

and a few days later...

a minor setback: the car's brakes -the biggest from a citroën c35 (what the f**k) aren't working along. parts are hard to find, and the pistons are very, very stuck

oh, yeah, I've got some polyester doors waiting to get in, if anybody has an interesting idea how to put them in (other hinges, or something) let me know, because i've never done that before

Well, it has been quiet here for some time, but I've been sourcing for parts, and from time to time we've also been working on our bug.

we've been welding the last bits and pieces on the body, and here you can see how we are going to keep the oil cool.

Found another 901 5-speed gearbox. I allready have a 2.4 t4 engine, but found a larger counterweight crank for it. so it will become slightly bigger.

for the brakes, we're going 944 turbo as so well explained on this site.

Normally, next week I'm going to Holland to pick up some aluminium rear trailing arms.

I hope to be ready for the aircooled race weekend in Meppen 2019.

Well,

still welding fitting and adjusting everything. the car should be at the painter by now, but if everything went like you want, life would be dull, no?

well this weekend I saw something for sale on facebook. not new, but they haven't run a lot.

and now they're in the trunk of my car

Meppen is getting closer!

it's a remmele set, for track use I've got much more confidence in these then in a red9 set; everything looks a bit tougher

It came from a bloke who changed his set-up, he had only one set for sale.
