More info

Hi

Kennedy state that the IV can handle 300 ft lb / 406 Newton Meters of torque with an organic disc. The factory STI torque figure is 253 ft lb / 343 Newton Meters, so I might be getting close to the clutches limit if I bump the boost up a bit.

I bought my adaptor when I was going to use a Type 1 box, that's why I have a 200 mm flywheel. I'm just wondering if I should bite the bullet and get a proper G50 clutch?

Kennedy have a G50 pressure plate that can handle 550 ft lb / 745.699 Newton Meters.

Steve:
I've just ordered a G50 adapter kit from DS Tuning, they quoted me €450. Stock Porsche clutch I think is the way to go, gives you the option to upgrade later on...

Hi Rich

I've been corresponding KEP, they have been very helpful. I think I will take your advice and go with a G50 clutch.

My G50 has the old style release lever so I need to do an upgrade as well.

Parts from Pelican
Improved (G-50) Clutch Release Fork, $165.75
G50 Improved Operating Shaft & Bushing Kit - Does NOT require drilling. $186.25
Clutch Slave Cylinder $87.50
Updated Throw Out Bearing Guide Tube $68.25
Throw Out Bearing $228.50
= $923.50 plus shipping

Parts from KEP
G50 light weight pressure plate $650
Organic Race disc $269 + 85 shipping
= $1004
Adapter kit is $580 + 100 shipping.

At least I can sell my existing adapter kit.

I have a feeling you will never have to upgrade that set-up!
I got a full clutch in good condition with my gearbox so will use that, at least to start with. I've heard of the upgraded release shaft, looks quite pricey to upgrade, they aren't that problematic are they? I was considering getting my 200mm flywheel and a Porsche flywheel welded together but I'm happy with my decision to get a new kit, I can sell the old one as a complete adapter kit now and a one piece flywheel will be much better...
Sounds like KEP's prices have come down, I got a quote just for a G50 flywheel quite a long time ago and it was considerably more than they quoted you.

Hi Rich

After reading a few posts on the Pelican forums they seem to have trouble with release bearing shaft corroding and sometimes the needle bearings falling apart. Mine was in beautiful condition.

There was also a horror story of the whole release bearing support ear snapping off. There are 2 ways of upgrading the release bearing support shaft, one bolts in the other needs drilling, I've heard that the drilling method can weaken the release bearing support ear.

I only got a pressure plate & ring gear with my G50, so I could get a clutch plate for about $300 and try my luck or Pelican have a well priced kit.

This kit includes:
Sachs OEM Spring-centred Clutch Disc
Sachs OEM Pressure Plate
Pressure Plate Bolts & Washers
Sachs OEM Throw-Out Bearing
Throw-Out Release Fork (Improved)
Flywheel Seal
Flywheel Bolts
Flywheel Pilot Bearing
Slave Cylinder
Slave Cylinder Hose
Clutch Alignment Tool
$1189.60

+ G50 Improved Operating Shaft & Bushing Kit $186.25
+ Updated Throw Out Bearing Guide Tube $68.25
+ Shipping

I'm going to have to try my luck to begin with, budget is a bit strained at the moment and it will only be a toy... I will make sure it is all well lubricated though..

Hi Rich

I forgot to mention, the stock G50 clutch is rated at 460 ft lb, where as the 200 mm Kennedy IV is rated at only 300 ft lb, so you should be OK.

Im still working on my shell to get it to the painters, but I need to have my head around all the little intricate things that pop up.

the best bit is that wiht the bigger diameter Porsche clutch the pedal will be much lighter..

Glad to hear you are busy beavering away on your car, I'm preparing to lift the body off and see how far the rot has spread...
