Swing Axle, TIV, 40 series tires???
So I did some searching and found alot on 901 boxes and other porsche stuff (interesting reading) here on GL. But I have a couple unanswered questions.
I'll be rebuilding my '63 S/A trans. and will be hooking up a 2.4 TIV to it, and I'm running 205/40/17's. My gear ratio is really bad in the city, I'm usually cruising in 3rd gear at 35-40 mph, and horrible on the freeway....4th gear at 3,600 rpm is about 65 mph. So I think 1st and 2nd are fine but want to widen 3rd and 4th so I can cruise around 75 mph at 3,500-3,800 rpm. I'm curious as to what gearing you guys are running for freeway speeds with 40 series tires and big motors? Thanx *** Well after some more searching it dawned on me to check Jake's site. I found out some useful information, I'd like to get the stage "C" kit but not for 1,599. I need a hopped up stage "B" kit, but not quite a stage "C" http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/Home_Page.htm Last edited by GRMNLK; October 17th 2005 at 01:24. |

I am thinking of doing a motor similar to yours 2.4l in the futur. One think only if you could get a irs chasis it would make you car a true germanlook plus it's better for handling. On a matter of gear boxes if you can get a 3.88 ring and pinion box you will be flying.

At a very minimum you need to get a 67 or later swing axle trans from any car that came with a 1500cc or 1600cc engine from the factory.
The later SSC trans with an AT code will get you a 3.88 R&P. You can take that and use it with an earlier Beetle .88, or a Bus .82 to get taller gearing. |

Bruce which of the bus gearbox had the .82 fourth gear. I am about to build a new gearbox with a brasilia bus case.

I don't know what year Bus trans has the .82 fourth. There does exist .88, and .85 Bus 4th gears as well.
To use a Bus gear in a Bug trans, the doner trans must be from before 1976. A 1976 and later 091 Bus gear will not work in a Bug trans. Do you have a pic of the Brasilia Bus case? |
