Great project! More high-res pics needed.. I am planning to use one of those shifters. What are your experiences with it? What does the throw work out to be? Any problems?

Dang way to tear it up!
It looks super sweet. Drop a cheap tranny in there and be gentle until winter when you can put a stout one in. Way to go man!

So speedy,
Any truth to the shifter not being 'smooth' enough to shift it quickly? |

hello chris and dorigtt, the shifter works fine, it is a bit time consuming to get it set up ,you must put another 4 holding bolts in the base to keep the shifter solid or you will find that consistant shifting is near impossible , i made a plate to sit on top of the base and bolted through this, do this and shifting is a pleasure the throw is about 1.5"-2" depending on how you set it , on my standard i had to cut the handbrake down 25mm to use it but this is no big deal , i have heard allot of people have had problems with this shifter ,most of these will be fixed by making the base more ridgid as the pivot point is 150mm above the tunnel
hope this helps cheers jon p.s will get some high res pics on as soon as i can

Can it not be mounted in 'reverse' ie backwards to how its mounted in the image above so it clears the handbrake?

chris ,the spring pushes it accross the gate fron 2nd to 3rd so if you reversed it the opposite would be true 3rd to 2nd, (generally you want to change up fast ) unless you somehow reversed the throw of the spring , cutting the handbrake down takes 30 mins , much easier

There is a bolt which controls where the spring 'rests', this bolt is in a slot, which means you can move it side to side. Simply moving this to the other side would reverse the action of this spring. I would rather not have to cut the handbrake lever, if I can help it..

well here are a few pictures of the car in its present form , i go away for a year of travelling on the 4th october , when i get back there is an ever growing list of things i would like to do to it gearbox ,new wheels, new fi microprocessor sort the front suspension and tweek the back suspension , at the moment i need bigger injectors to get it running sweet it has injectors suitable for about 275 bhp , push it to hard on a hot day with two people in and you run out of fuel and suffer pre ignition ,i split a barrel the other week so i know but it is back on the road and just done about 1000miles with no problems the last hundred running 80mph 4000 revs and 90 degrees on the oil temp anyway here are the pictures

Damn that's a clean lookin' car, you could get lost in the reflection of the paint. Awesome car, I just can't get enough of it. Too bad about the gearbox though, that was my one biggest fear about a type 1 tranny. With the turbo so close in back did you ever get it hot enough to cause problems with the interior or did you put a heat shield on it?
