901 with sing axles.

Hi all,
This question is for my friend and myself. Can a early 901 gear box use swing axles or is it purly for irs trans.

FWIW, I talked with a guy on one of the Porsche Spyder forums that was running such a transmission. A 914 box converted to swingaxles. He had the conversion done by Dave Folts of Folts Transmission. From what I understand it used the T2 style Folts swingaxle conversion with U-joints. I don't know if any special modifications were done to the differential to serve double duty of taking side loads, but he did say Dave installed a Quaife TBD, and I'm guessing along with a full rebuild. It used modified output stubs to allow the U-joints to bolt on. Probably about a $4K+ job when it was all said and done. According to the spyder owner it worked great.
