Berg 5 conversion....

Hi all,

I'm thinking of converting my gearbox to a 5 speed, but haven't had much luck in locating much reading material about the berg5.

Does anyone have any links to provide me with some food for thought?

Cheers,

Ian.

The porsche tranny conversion is alot more bullet proof and you still get a 5 speed. check it out

The porsche tranny may be slightly stronger than a type 1 based gear box but there is the cost of maintainance and repair. If you can break a VW tranny chances are you can break a porsche tranny. The only differance is the cost of replacement parts.

true very true! But I have been told it takes alot to beef up the type 1 tranny to make it as strong. not to mention the cool factor of running porsche in your bug. Also the berg 5 I have heard from a former borg warner technition is crap.
For the price to bullet proof a type one tranny you could get two rebuilt porsche trannnies off of ebay, or a junk yard.
Am I right?

I paid $800 for my 4 speed type one and it has everything you could shake a stick at when it comes to performance parts. With the exception of a ribbed case.

I'm gonna try the 901 conversion pretty soon. I got the gearbox, a pair of complete 2 litre Type IV's, a DTM, and various other goodies for $1500.

Stock 901's handle 200hp if you don't wind up to 5000 rpm and pop the clutch. They are cheap to buy, but expensive to fix.

I had to convert mine from 914 usage, and make a 901 selector shaft from a 914's and a Bug's.

The only thing I don't like is how the shift rod has to be bent, and lengthened. I'm gonna try and build a 3pc. shift rod assembly with small cardan universal joints, and linear support bearings.
