Pictures of the '52
He's not lazy. He's just swanning around in Australia.
It was good to meet you James. I've checked out the German Look forum on your suggestion. I could spend a fair bit of time here. Does my car classify? http://www.clubvw.org.au/images/pc_may.8.jpg Bring on photos of the '52 |

Performance?
It's not a drag car it's a circuit racer with a standard gearbox. Most people can relate to quarter mile times so I'll start by stating that it a 14.9 second quarter mile at the 2004 VW nationals.
I usually race pretty well with Porsche Boxsters. They get me on the longer tracks and I get them on the tighter tracks. If you don't know the tracks the times won't mean anything to you. I've got a good yarn from my favourite track, Wakefield Park, to share with you. I lined up on the dummy grid and this guy in a Honda S2000 cam up next to me and asked me if he could go in front of me (This is unusual and would probably be considered rude). I let him go through politely but in the back of my mind I thought I won't let this bloke get away. We got let out in pairs for out timed runs. This Honda pulled about 5 or car lengths on me up the hill and I got him back a little bit through the bends. On about the second lap my tyres heated up and the oil was hot enough to give the engine maximum rpm. The guy in Honda gained a few lengths on me up the hill but I got right up close to him through the bends. I sat right on his back bumper on the last lap. I really tried to fill up his mirrors as much as I could. On the second run he came up to me and said "This time you go first and I'll catch you". He said "I'll catch you" not "I'll TRY and catch you". This peeved me off. When we were given the signal to go I actually spun the wheels by accident because I was so revved up. I only had him in my mirror for 2 corners. On the next run I pulled up in the dummy grid and the guy was well down the order. He wasn't keen for another race. One of the officials came up to me while I was waiting for my run and said "I was looking at buying one of those S2000s but now I don't think I'll spend seventy grand on something that can be beaten by a beetle!". That's what it's all about and why I keep my beetle looking standard. All the work goes on under the skin. I race the car with a bloke called Jak Rizzo. We do supersprints and the occasional hillclimb with the Porsche Club of NSW. The Porsche guys are great and regularly compliment how quick and well turned out our cars are. Sorry for the long post. Re
Thanks for the kind words everyone.
Oh and hi Jak, fancy bumping into you here. Jak's got some good stories. In fact, nobody in his neighbourhood will race his beetle at the traffic lights. He's embarrassed quite a fewbig V8 engined Aussie cars. You'd better save that for another post because we don't want to hijack Jimby's post. Regards |
