Just got a Type IV, now what

Happy to say, that I just picked up my first type iv for my bug.. its complete, and came out of a 914

Getting ready to view the Raby Type IV Video Bug Me video..

Bought the Joe Cali conversion book.. Seems pretty straight forward.

My question.. How should I approach this... Its a 1.8 FI.. was thinking dual carbs, with the Joe Cali shroud..

SHould I keep the displacement the same.. how about the FI.. since I have the complete system..
Any one have experience with the Joe Cali Shroud..

Now I have to go back to Shoptalk and read up.. but any advise appreciated on the tear down and rebuild..

I am so excited.. but unfortunately this will be a winter project..

Time to save up..

Got the engine, and watched the Type IV rebuild tape from Bug me videos..

That Jake Raby video is awesome... I learned alot.. If you haven't seen it, it is a must.. Just don't try it in one sitting.. Info overload.. But that is the beauty of the tape, you can just rewind and watch again..

For now just learning as much as I can via the web, and books.. This will be my first engine rebuild so I don't want to wreck it before I put it into the car.. The engine I have is a 1.8 (914) engine with FI.... Probably keep it the same but carbs.. At first I thought Joe Cali, but now thinking DTM..
Any thoughts..

Rebuilding an engine is no small task.. definitely not cheap.. but I want to learn as much as I can on these engines.. if I damage, I can always save for a couple of years and order a Raby Special..

Again I salute you Jake on a fine product.. (from one marine to another )

Its on my list of things to do..

Once I got done with the Type IV vid.. I was left wanting more..
It was like, waiting for the sequel to the block buster, but knowing that it was only going to be better..

I have to relook at the stage kits and there prices.. That was what was making me lean toward the Cali conversion. Specially since this isn't a diplacement moster..

even if you don't get a DTM, it shows you the rest of the stuff you have to figure out... it even features the Cali shroud...

Not really,

Spoke for a few secs.. He was dynoing an engine and was quite busy.. and to be honest I was more shocked getting him on the line and actually talking to him..

Corny but hey simple things for the simple guy..

I am still debating on which shroud... I was hoping someone here actually went the Cali route.. I may need to check shoptalk and see what is going on there..I think Joe Cali trolls that forum.. Speaking to him now that would be cool also..

loaf, look at your shroud decision this way. DTM has all of the hard work already done for you. just pay some money and follow the instructions and you are done. cali will be more work and requires some level of fabrication skills, but is cheaper (nothing is free is it?).

so if you have the skills and the time, cali is an option. if you don't, DTM would be the way to go. the DTM will be a little more unique looking as well.

Just ordered one of Jakes Type IV videos today.. Thanks Jake and Kathy..

Also just got my 5 speed.. 911 (901).. Yep 5 speeds..

Now that I have blown mucho dinero in a couple of days.. Hope the wife don't troll the German Look Forum This Helps dictate the route I will go..

Joe Cali here I come.. I will look at getting the Alt Stand and Crank Shaft Pulley but everything else will have to source or build..

Should be a lot of fun.. I will go the rivet way first, and then do the welding..
I have been rereading everyday the cali book.. and since the funds are low, this may be the option I go.. Lot of good info at SHoptalk..

I will take pics and keep everyone posted..

You couold always check e-bay for a DTM shroud... I got a good deal on one, and it came with a kennedy flywheel and a 2.0 engine too.
