Generic HP Numbers

Has anyone our there seen or pulled together a list with some generic HP ratings based on various engine kits / sizes.

For example Gene Berg's 1776 "kit" is good for 95hp.

Obviously heads cams and carbs make huge differences, but are there any general's 'all things equal'.

Example
----------
1641 = 70hp
1776 = 95hp
2008 = 1xx hp
2110 = .......

Not being on the extream side, I personally am looking for something that will give me a 0-60 time of under 7 seconds. I am guessing given HP/Weight, this should be doable with 120hp...However, what size engine do I need to accomplish this?

Thoughts,
-Paul

There are WAY too many many variables in engine configuration and assembly. Two engines with the same parts will make different amounts of power. If you throw in cams/heads/valve sizes/carbs/venturies/jets/ignition timing/timing curve/and a host of others, engine size is one small part of the puzzle.
As soon as you state a number for a combo, someone will prove it wrong, higher or lower, doesn't matter...

dont forget that gearing and suspension will all effect 0-60 times as well too.

Yes, I realize that, thus my usage of Generic, and "all things being equal"

So let talk range instead of specific. For exampe: 1776 - between 70-95 hp......

-OR let me instead ask this. Who has dynoed their engine, and what is your configuration? -OR anyone doing under 7.0sec 0-60 and what is your config?

0-100 km/t (62 mph) in less than 7 sec. in a normal weight street car requires at least 150 hp. even with a good ratio. A 170 hp. 2,4 l. T4 in a super beetle does just about that, with a stock ratio tranny.

"W" 1700 80hp
"EB" 1700 72 hp
914 1800 76 hp
GA 914 2000 95 hp
GB 914 2000 100 hp
GC 914 2000 88 hp
GE Bus 2000 76 hp
That's about all I can remember offhand.

ive seen a number of 1776s pull 120-130hp without too much problem if you have big valve heads with a P&P and everything else set up to go with it.

ive seen 1915s pull in the 150+hp range with similar mods.

from what ive seen type4s tend to have slightly lower HP readings for similar size but high torque #s. mostly due to the exhaust port design on the T4 heads

displacement doesn't have a lot to do with MAX hp. that is more an issue of heads/compression ratio/cams. displacement affects torque #s and RPM range. for the same head/cam/CR a small engine and a large engine will be suprisingly close in HP #s but the bigger engine will have more torque and produce its peak power at lower RPM

????

okay so let me see if I got this generalization right. In a typical type 1 if the displacments are the same let just say a 1800.

A type 1 1800 will produce more hp,
but the type IV 1800 will produce more torque?
and less hp generally speaking.

So what sort of power would a stock 914 2.0l compare to in type 1 terms? A mild 1776?

I understand the great power differences that can be changed with different components, but as VWfan53 put it generally speaking. Thanks

A stock 914 2.0L puts out 95hp and 108 ft lbs of torque at 4500 rpms. This is with the FI and stock cam which is set up for emissions too.
A different cam,compression boost and carbs can wake up a 2.0L as can FI tuning, p&p the heads, etc. Mine puts out 95hp & 110ft lbs at the rear wheels (dynoed) so that's about 110hp./125ftlbs at the engine. The torque on a 914 2.L comes on at 2500rpms and is flat until 4500 so thats a lot of torque. My peak hp is a 5000 rpms.

How does that compare to a 1776 type 1 motor? Depends of the engine! Cam, carbs, compression all play a huge role so .....A standard 1776 makes 85hp or so, maybe a wildly built one make 100 hp. Can't remember the torque curves....
I know of a 1800 type 4 thats makes 180hp at 7500 rpms, now that is a screamer.

0-60 and other stuff

Check out the "facts and figures" section on JMR's web site

www.johnmaherracing.co.uk

He's got all the specs on there for various setups.

All BHPs are as tested on his dyno and all 0-60 and 1/4 mile runs are as timed at the strip. He even gives you the gear ratios that were used.

Generally a top site. His performance guide makes very interesting reading also. Well, it did until I lost my copy!

I'm currently in the same boat as you, I can't decide what engine to go for. I've got a deposite down on an engine - just don't know which engine. Started off as a mild 100hp 1776 but know upto a 150bhp 2110. Better get it built soon - any more time thinking about it and it'll be a 500bhp 48v V12 - he he.
