"Where did this thing come from?" (engine code)

I was curious about what vehicle my T IV 2.0 litre came from. The man I got it from did say it was a 914 2.0 that he aquired while stationed at Ramstein AFB. The code is CJ002395X. I've got a couple of bits of info on Type IV engine numbers, but none of it mentions that particular prefix. Not in a Bus, 411, 412, or Porsche.


Anyone Know where it came from? I need to know before I tear it down.

Does the X at the end on the number not suggest a VW rebuilt motor? CJ is a '75 Bus motor, I don't think it's 2.0l tho' sorry.

The X is stamped in the same script as the rest of the serial number. It looks like the characters in the number came from the same set of stamps, but numbers like that are easy to copy.

If it's not a 2 ltr, what should it displace originally? It has obviously been apart, and back together, and probably still has stock pistons, and cylinders, but I won't know actual displacement until I can measure bore and stroke.

...And if it's not a 2 ltr, can I make it into one fairly easily? (2 litre crank, pistons/cylinders, flycut the heads) It wouldn't be right
to have a 1.8 Type I, and a 1.7 Type IV in the driveway!:silly:

Just took a Head off. 3.70" X 2.80". It's a 2.0 litre.

Matt, I was mistaken about the X on the engine code. It's out of line and not as deeply stamped as the rest of the digits, so your'e right. It was likely re-built by VW.

Yeti, I looked the CJ up in the John Muir book. Going by this the '75 2.0l was prefixed GD.

It is not too clear, but it looks lile in the US mid seventies:
Cx n = 1.7
Ax n = 1.8
Gx n = 2.0l

However my 2.0l is prefixed CU, small valves and concave piston tops. (Is that like yours?)

My bigger valved 1.8l T412 is prefixed AN so that follows.


I'm happy for you that your T4 is bigger than your T1

According to Type 4 Secrets Revealed, the CJ case was from a 76-79 Transporter.

It came with 70HP, Solid Lifters, & Dual Carbs (European Market)

Yep, mine's got small valves, and dished pistons:toilet: too. Jim posted previously that it is an european engine, which does make sense because the fellow I got it from said that he got it while in Germany. As you said, vujade, a 70 horse two-carb Bus engine.

The carbs he gave me are Solex/Brosal 32 PDSI with Type IV inlet
manifolds. Is that normally found on that particular engine?

Your carbs sound like standard replacements from the 90's? if not the originals. Not sure tho'.

Everybody, thanks for all the help with engine numbers and such. I've decided to replace the pistons and rings to raise the compression, and work on the heads. I will definitely use some kind of dual carb induction, preferably Dellorto DRLA 45s but I'll settle for Weber 44s. Ive already got the cam I'll use. All I need is the Valvetrain parts, and a machine shop who can install bigger valves in VW Bus heads on the east coast of the US.
