Just wanted to inject a sad possibility here. Keep in mind if you were to hit an object at high speed, say a rock or a piece of lumber, or even a pothole, and the rim bent, it has to bend less than 2mm or your looking at harps or heat. Not to be the bearer of bad news, but I've seen those wheels bent more than 2mm, I'd just hate to have anyone injured or killed in the name of looking cool. Might I suggest stepping up to the next size wheel? That should introduce enough safety for this problem at least. It does make me drool though.

Don`t think that I`ll ever drive my toy on a road with potholes
Brakes have been checked by a LVV Certifier and approved after machining the 2nd caliper brackets with 3 mounting holes . The Certifier builds race cars himself (super sevens) and reckons that it is plenty of room. These wheels carry the weight of a 996 convertible which is considerably heavier than a 54 Beetle. I saw the brakes of a Peugeot 205 World rally car from 1984 and found that these had only 1 mm clearance between wheel and caliper. I checked them during the rally Targa New Zealand and no problems on this French thingy. If I hit a pothole or rock so hard that it bends the rim, I should be worried about other things too ! But thanks for your concern

The wheels have not been balanced since the clearance problem occured, have to talk to the guys at Frank Allen tyres here on what to do. They`ve got the latest equipment for tyre fitting and balancing and hope fully come up with a solution. The wheel design does`nt really give you many options with the spokes sitting so far outside. Could move the weights more to the outside from the original location but then I would need 10 mm wide balance weights to have 5 mm clearance from the outer edge to the caliper. Most weights are around 20 mm wide.

Impressive looking project. Must've taken a lot of planning. Looks fantastic. (I guess you won't be making the 12-hour flight with it to drive the streets of Baltimore city, though.)

But do you have a picture of the backside of the disc and the hub mounted on the spindle? Care to join your meashurements on the caliper-bracket?
