Have T4 header questions

Will this header work with shortened heater boxes on a T4 conversion in a Beetle?

It says that it is for a 1.7 914

No personal experience but.... I heard the flanges may need reworking to match, other than that-the header collector is the absolute worst design anyone could build for performance. I don't think the heater box/header primary tube length would be equal=poor performance also.

Would it be functional? yes. Are you throwing away HP? definately. If you must have heat and don't want a gas heater I would slice off the collector and install a good Merged collector from S&S Headers and a better muffler.

Kdanie

Thanks. I realize it is not the best design for HP. I was just looking for a temporary setup for a running 1.7 I am going to purchase and use in my GL 1302 until I build my 2270.

The 1.7 comes with shortened heater boxes, so I will need a header and this one is cheap enough. I didnt want to purchase the exhaust I want for my 2270 because it may be a little to big for the stock 1.7.

For a temporary thing, go for it. You are right, an exhaust suitable for a decent 2270 would be HUGE for a 1.7L and cause more problems than the set up you are planning.

Joe,
Probably you already did see this, but the exhaust is made for a bus/vanagon, not a bug! The bends on the right side of the picture will hit your bugs rear valance for sure
.
For a cheap solution if you have a stock muffler around, you can make that to fit: you cut both sides of just behind the flanges and weld them back up again. Make an opening in the muffler at the rear of the muffler like in the type 1 location and weld an exhaust tip on it at, say, the left stock 'pea-shooter' opening.
Will probably flow not much worse than the glaspack thing...
Greetings,
Walter

Walter, will the header work with a bug without the glaspack?

if it will, I i could always have a new muffler setup welded on.

Joe,
Difficult to tell with this one, the bends on the left hand-side may hit the inner bumperbrachet attachment panel of the bug if they dont bend down also...
There is of course only one way to find out :-)
Good luck,
Walter
