Biggest rear wheel possible for a stock fender?
Just wondering what the biggest wheel would be to stuff in a stock rear fender.
I am pretty sure a 7" will fit... But I was hoping to maybe try 8" On any of these the offset is super deep (65 et) so I am not worried about pushing out too far. If anything maybe have to space it off the spring plates!

Adrian,
Not sure if largest wheel is the right thing to look at. The tire size will determine the space needed. Sure, the wheel has to fit, but the sidewalls and tread will be the main concern. I like to go to http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirebran.jsp to check out the section width of a particular tire. You can also see which size rims are recommended for which size tire. Pretty usefull. I have a Karmann Ghia and we all know how limiting those finder wells are. Take care and good luck in choosing the right wheel/tire combo. BTW, backspacing is very important also as you already know. I'd have to say 7.5" is the widest. Sue's Bug has 9" wheels under 2" wider fenders with an inch cut off of the bump-stop landings. The wheel is about .5" from the edge of the fender, and a little less than that from what's left of the bump-stop.
I believe NO_H2O has stock fenders and 16"x??" 964 wheels on his...maybe he knows...

Thanks for the info guys!
Yeti, I think you are right on the money with the 7.5". FWIW this is for an Oval and I want to keep the steal fenders. But beef it up as much as possible! ... Well I do have the 7"s already so might as well leave well enough alone. Totally agreed about the tire size... I currently have Yoko AVIDs in a 225/50 16 which is a pretty big tire. Thanks!!!

I've done 7's (17's) with a 235/45 tire, and 7.5's (18's) with a 225/40 tire. Both the above were +42 offsets on stock drums. I think the 7.5 is the limit, because then you have issues with the tire and the springplate.
Good luck, Lanner |

Yeep. I totally forgot about that... I had to put the control arm/springplate nuts on the inside of the springplate, and grind a touch off of the bolt heads on Sues to be sure her Cup III's would be clear. I later found out that the grinding wasn't really necessary after I got the spacer situation right though.

7.5" isn't the limit. Here's an 8!

Dang those 8"s really fill it in nicely!
Like Yeti and Flat mentioned, are the spring plates stock? Thanks!

Hi Dirk
They look sensational. Are you running 2 or 3 bolt front struts and is the ET/offset the same on the front wheels? Are there any other photos of your car? I just did a calculation on this site http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp and comparing a Cookie/Fuchs 7 X .. with a 23 ET you would have 36 mm less inner clearance and 10mm more clerance to the fender. Hello, I am running the 3 bolt suspension on the front but with the Remmele Front struts for more space on the innerside. The offset is in the front the same.
